Herculaneum (Italy)
(Official website of Vesuvian Archeological Sites)
These pictures are scans of 35mm prints taken in 2002. Situated near Naples, the Herculaneum excavations are smaller than Pompeii but often better preserved. The Roman town lies below the modern town of Ercolano, having been buried below many metres of boiling mud during the Vesuvius eruption of 79 AD.

Hersonissos (Crete)
This tourist town on the Greek island of Crete has a pyramidal roman mosaic fountain along the sea front, and an early christian basilica on the headland, full of mosaic fragments. These photographs were taken in October 2004.

Arbeia
Roman Fort (Tyne and Wear, England).
Official
Arbeia website
Notable for several reconstructions of the Gatehouse, Commandant's
Building, and Barracks, which stand on the original site of the buildings.
The interior decoration used in the reconstructions gives a good idea of how 'interesting' Roman tastes could be. The
photos were taken in May 2003.

Bath
(Somerset, England).
Official
Bath website
Various pictures from the famous Roman spa.
The photos were taken in May 2003.
The
'Panorama of baths' picture is a collage of two digital photographs.
The pinkish
stonework up to a metre or two above the waterline, and the column bases,
are Roman; everything else is Victorian, including the statues and pillars.
(The Victorian Photograph shows this fairly clearly.)

Pictures of Roman re-enactment (possibly the Ermine Street Guard) outside the Roman Fort originally called 'Banna' on Hadrian's Wall in Northern England. The photos are scans of 35mm prints taken in 2003.

Chedworth
Roman Villa (Gloucestershire,
England).
National
Trust Chedworth website
A Romano-British villa with some very nice mosaics.
The underfloor
heating ducts and Hypocaust pillars are also well preserved, and make
an interesting counterpoint to the tiled Hypocaust pillars in Bath, shown
above. The photos were taken in May 2003.

Great
Witcombe Roman Villa (Gloucestershire,
England).
English
Heritage Great Witcombe page
A quiet little villa that proved a little hard to find! The wide image
is a collage of several merged photographs and shows the slope of the
site (there's a slight 'gap' about a third of the way across).
The
photos were taken in May 2003.
The illustration of the villa below is from a sign
on the site and is copyright ©

seen in our photo beside it.

Hardknott
Roman Fort (Cumbria, England).
English
Heritage Hardknott page
A remote Roman outpost found halfway up the steep Hardknott
Pass in Eskdale. The
fort is aligned so that the corners face the compass points. The photos
were taken in August 2003.

The
fort is very well preserved, although everything above the line of slate
tiles has been rebuilt using rubble found on the site (the North-West
Wall outer face image above shows this clearly.)
There's
a pivot hole for the South West gate which can be seen in both the South-West Gate images above.
